Legacy? What legacy?

So, what would a film about Madonna's and other women in music (Aretha, Billie, etc.) and their influence on women's creative lives look like?

It is this creative legacy that sees our women athletes accomplishing feats every bit as daring as the ones men achieve. It is this creative, expressive legacy that leads directly to makeovers of women from frumpy, frowsy disappearing-into-the-woodwork women to glamorous sexpots who don't look many days past 30, and are buoyed up by foundation garments and hours of hair and makeup and shopping and fitting, all unveiled in dramatic moments on Oprah week after week.

It is this legacy that is making it possible for women to finally bring their minds to bear on the most difficult problems at the frontiers of science and medicine.

And those women who might not be aware of their own creative connection can find ways to tap into it by going out and doing things like going to hear live music, an art reception, or a salsa dancing or pottery class. Or learning to repair bicycles for the neighborhood kids.

Then you can look at the fringes of this culture, like the groupies and the Courtney Loves and the Jessica Simpsons and the ones who went too far, like Janis Joplin (great excuse to look up Penelope Spheeris).

And now Madonna seems to be working on a spiritual legacy, and saying out loud again that people may choose a new and different path even if it is not the expected one. And I see a live and let live attitude about allowing people to find their own spiritual paths as a critical, life-and-death choice that determines whether you will be at war or at peace with your fellow humans. I'm tolerant as the day is long if following your path doesn't mean harming others in the name of your religion. So my question is: Do women in particular feel freer to choose different spiritual paths today than they might have twenty years ago? Are there longitudinal studies about faith started 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 years ago?

That's enough to keep me busy today.
